FIRE workshop brought researchers together in Jyväskylä to develop training in register-based research
Researchers at different stages of their careers gathered at the FIRE Education & Training workshop to discuss training and skills needs related to register-based research in Finland.
FIRE (Finnish Infrastructure for Register-Based Research) is a research infrastructure funded by the Research Council of Finland. It provides researchers with a secure and user-friendly remote access environment for using register-based data. The infrastructure is built on Statistics Finland’s FIONA system and supports the broad and responsible research use of register data.
In addition to building the technical infrastructure, FIRE also places strong emphasis on developing researchers’ skills. One of the project’s work packages focuses specifically on education and training in register-based research. The aim is to develop open basic and advanced training in Finland, lower the threshold for new researchers to start using register data, and strengthen the national community of register-based researchers.
The workshop held in Jyväskylä brought together researchers from different universities and research institutes. During the day, participants shared experiences of working with register data, mapped researchers’ training needs, and discussed topics such as data management and the use of remote access environments in research.
The discussions at the workshop support FIRE’s goal of developing education in register-based research and strengthening expertise in the field in Finland.
