The Finnish Infrastructure for Register-Based Research (FIRE)

FIRE (The Finnish Infrastructure for Register-Based Research) is a remote access, application and training infrastructure for register-based research in Finland, to be developed during 2025โ2028.
As a national research infrastructure, FIRE brings together cutting-edge technology and services to support register-based research using Finnish data.
At the core of the project is Statistics Finlandโs FIONA remote access system, which will be significantly expanded and enhanced in collaboration with universities, research institutes and CSC โ IT Centre for Science. With FIRE, the use of register data will become more efficient, more accessible and more secure.
The Finnish Infrastructure for Register-Based Research is:
๐ based on cutting-edge technology
๐ enabling smooth and accessible research
๐ widely networked both nationally and internationally
๐ responsible โ ethically and legally sustainable
With FIRE, Finnish register-based research can maintain and strengthen its position in the global scientific community. FIRE will also make the benefits of register-based research more widely available โ both within academia and across public administration.
