FIRE (The Finnish Infrastructure for Register-Based Research) is a remote access, application and training infrastructure for register-based research in Finland, to be developed during 2025โ€“2028.

As a national research infrastructure, FIRE brings together cutting-edge technology and services to support register-based research using Finnish data.

At the core of the project is Statistics Finlandโ€™s FIONA remote access system, which will be significantly expanded and enhanced in collaboration with universities, research institutes and CSC โ€“ IT Centre for Science. With FIRE, the use of register data will become more efficient, more accessible and more secure.

The Finnish Infrastructure for Register-Based Research is:

๐Ÿž‚ based on cutting-edge technology
๐Ÿž‚ enabling smooth and accessible research
๐Ÿž‚ widely networked both nationally and internationally
๐Ÿž‚ responsible โ€“ ethically and legally sustainable

With FIRE, Finnish register-based research can maintain and strengthen its position in the global scientific community. FIRE will also make the benefits of register-based research more widely available โ€“ both within academia and across public administration.
