In autumn 2026, FIRE is responding to the growing need for expertise in register-based research. Laura Kananen, Docent at Tampere University, presented the new online course Introduction to Register-based Research in Finland at the FIRE webinar on 22 September.
The course is being developed as a nationwide, multidisciplinary introduction to register-based research in Finland. Teaching and course materials are provided by the Universities of Tampere, Turku and Jyväskylä, together with Findata and Statistics Finland. The academics responsible for the course represent the social sciences, health sciences, business and economics.
The course will be offered on DigiCampus and will include self-study materials, online lectures and exercises. The course will be launched in stages during the 2026–2027 academic year, after which it is intended to be available year-round.
Students at the Universities of Turku, Tampere, Jyväskylä and Helsinki, as well as Aalto University, will be able to complete the course and earn ECTS credits through a cross-institutional study agreement between the universities.
