About FIRE
FIRE is a remote access, service and training infrastructure for register-based research. The Research Council of Finland is funding its development and implementation during 2025–2028.
FIRE builds on Statistics Finland’s existing FIONA remote access system. It provides a state-of-the-art, user-friendly and secure computing and register data environment to support high-impact research.
FIRE promotes the creation of new research datasets and register-based research projects, provides support on research ethics, and trains a new generation of experts in the use of register data for science and evidence-based policymaking.
While FIRE particularly supports cutting-edge research in the social, behavioural and health sciences, its benefits extend across all fields of research.
How will FIRE transform Finnish register-based research?
Remote access to register data to the next level – FIRE develops the FIONA system by enhancing performance, improving usability and enabling data sharing.
Artificial intelligence as support – FIRE introduces Large Language Model (LLM) AI tools to streamline research processes and lower the threshold for starting register-based research.
Broader data selection – FIRE expands the range of harmonised and pre-prepared register datasets available to researchers.
Support for new data use – FIRE helps to build enriched register datasets by linking them with other data sources, such as surveys, medical imaging data or commercial customer data.
Guidance on permit processes – FIRE provides clear support for ethical reviews and data access applications.
Training for new users – FIRE offers courses and self-study materials that facilitate learning in register-based research.
Connecting national and international actors – FIRE advances register-based research and strengthens collaboration across borders.
Influencing regulation – FIRE actively contributes to the development of legislation and regulation concerning register-based research in Finland and the EU.
Interested in joining?
FIRE is an open development initiative for all those conducting, utilising or regulating register-based research. If your organisation would like to join as an external member, you may contact either the consortium leader, Professor Jani Erola, or Research Coordinator Annimari Meri.
Individual researchers are also warmly welcome to get in touch — together we can explore how both your organisation and you personally could become involved.
The Research Council of Finland funds the development and construction of the FIRE infrastructure during 2025–2028 (decision number 367675).
