Education and Training

The task force is developing introductory training on register-based research in Finland and promoting the formation of a national community of register researchers.

At present, it is difficult for new students and researchers to become familiar with register data and research based on them, since training on topics such as data access procedures, data handling and management, longitudinal research methods, and remote access systems is lacking. To improve the situation, FIRE is creating national, openly available online training at both basic and advanced levels, focusing on practices related to register data and longitudinal methods.

The task force is also exploring ways to enable the use of real register data in theses for both undergraduate and graduate students.

To strengthen Finnish expertise in register-based research, the group is building structures for establishing a national community of register researchers. This community can share experiences and learn together how to use data and methods, for example in regular research workshops.

The activities of the task force are based on the needs of the research community, which develops best when members actively share their expectations and expertise. You can join the community by contacting the chairs of the task force, Mika Haapanen and Satu Pyöriä.
