FIRE Research Workshop in Tampere, 20 November 2026
The third FIRE workshop will be held in Tampere on Friday, 20 November 2026, from 12:00 to 15:45. The workshop will begin with a presentation of the FIRE online course pilot, which will be launched during the academic year 2026-2027. This will be followed by a research workshop centred on participants’ own article manuscripts and analyses.
The workshop will focus on ongoing register-based analyses. Feedback will be provided by fellow participants as well as senior researchers from different disciplines, including economics, social sciences, and health sciences.
Previous workshops were held at the University of Jyväskylä and Statistics Finland. The workshops focused on register-based research in Finland, including research practices, access to administrative data, and the use of data resources provided by Statistics Finland and other public authorities.
Call for Papers DL 1 October
Please submit your abstract proposal (about 300 words) for the workshop no later than 1 October using the registration form linked. The seminar programme will be prepared on the basis of the submitted abstracts and will be published around mid-October.
Participants presenting their work should be prepared to submit an analysis manuscript (min about 2000–max 10 000 words) one week before the event and to act as a discussant for another participant’s manuscript during the workshop. At the workshop, presenters will give a brief presentation focusing on the process behind their manuscript rather than on final results. Presentations may address, for example:
- how datasets have been linked and combined,
- how variables have been constructed or modified,
- methodological choices that have been made,
- lessons that may be useful to other researchers, and
- aspects of the analysis on which the presenter would particularly welcome feedback and suggestions.
The presentation may, for instance, consist of a walkthrough of the analysis code, such as a Stata do-file, R script, or equivalent. The designated discussant will comment first, followed by comments and discussion from all participants.
Depending on the number of submissions, approximately 30 minutes will be allocated to each paper. Parallel sessions may be organised if needed.
Analyses may be drawn from any discipline, employ any methodological approach, and be at any stage of the research process. The common denominator is the use of register data. The aim is to collectively support and advance researchers’ analytical work, whether it is at the data construction stage or the analysis stage.
Confirmed discussants currently include Mika Haapanen and Juho Jokinen (University of Jyväskylä), Elina Kilpi-Jakonen (University of Turku), and Laura Kananen and Satu Pyöriä (Tampere University). We would also like to invite all interested senior researchers to serve as discussants – sign up by 1.10.!
Researchers at all career stages are warmly welcome. We encourage both early-career and experienced register-data researchers to submit abstract proposals and participate.
Please register by 1 October if you wish to submit an abstract and/or participate as a senior discussant (needed for programme preparation).
Registration is also open to those who wish to participate without giving a presentation. Registration as a participant without a presentation is open until 1 November, due to venue and coffee arrangements.
